HOW MOBILE DEIONIZATION (MODI) WORKS

Mobile Deionization (MODI) uses trailer-mounted ion exchange systems that are configured to meet site-specific water quality requirements. Depending on the application, incoming water passes through cation, anion, or mixed-bed resin vessels arranged to produce high-purity deionized water. System instrumentation tracks flow, conductivity, and total volume, with optional remote monitoring and predictive analytics to schedule trailer exchanges before resin exhaustion. Because MODI requires no permanent infrastructure, it provides fast, flexible, and reliable high-purity water for emergency, temporary, or planned operational needs.

We cover the full plant from incoming water to process water to wastewater, as well as vapor phase/odor control equipment.

ADVANCED MOBILE DI SYSTEM FEATURES

Envirogen’s mobile deionization trailer and broader MODI systems are built with robust design principles and high-quality components to ensure dependable, long-term operation in industrial environments:

  • Custom configuration: Mobile DI units feature tailored setups based on your source water analysis. Trailers can be configured as softeners, separate bed systems, or complete deionization systems.
  • Maximized efficiency: Capacity is maximized by using weak base anion resin to extend the life of strong base anion resin. This configuration adds significant capacity to the trailer and reduces the frequency of resin exchange.
  • Remote monitoring and analytics: Each MODI trailer can include state-of-the-art instrumentation such as an exterior panel-mounted PLC and HMI screen to monitor flow rates, conductivity, and total flow. All data can be monitored remotely in real time, and predictive analytics calculate expected run length based on historical performance for proactive trailer exchanges.
  • Easy operation: MODI trailers are designed for practical, straightforward use, with the ability to run as a two-bank system for lower flow rates or a dual-bank system for high-flow applications.

APPLICATIONS FOR MOBILE WATER TREATMENT

Mobile deionization and demineralization systems deliver rapid, on-site solutions for temporary or emergency requirements, ensuring operational continuity and regulatory compliance across industrial and utility environments.

Typical scenarios:

  • Emergency water needs: Rapid response to water treatment plant failures, changes in feedwater quality, severe weather, leaks, feedwater upsets, or environmental compliance issues. These systems also support emergency mobile DI water requirements during critical plant conditions.
  • Scheduled maintenance: Support during scheduled shutdowns, planned maintenance, equipment servicing, and water treatment plant outages.
  • Plant commissioning: Ideal for start-up activities and pre-commission services, including hydrostatic testing and steam blows.
  • Capacity expansions: Provides operational flexibility, supporting interim use, seasonal or peak demand requirements, and supplemental capacity support.
  • Zero discharge applications: Helps manage waste minimization programs and environmental compliance during short-term or temporary operating conditions.

If your requirement is better suited to a compact, tank-exchange model, our Portable Exchange Deionization (PEDI) service provides a simple, cost-effective alternative for producing deionized water without trailer deployment.

FAQs

Looking for clarity on mobile deionization services (MODI)? Below are the questions industrial and utility clients ask most often when considering temporary or emergency high-purity water support. If you still have questions, contact us via the contact form, and our team will be happy to help.

What is mobile deionization (MODI)?

Mobile Deionization (MODI) is a trailer-based mobile ion exchange deionization system that delivers high-purity deionized water directly to your site without the need for permanent infrastructure. It supports emergency, temporary, and planned operational requirements.

When should mobile deionization be used?

MODI systems are deployed during emergencies, planned maintenance, plant outages, commissioning, capacity shortfalls, seasonal demand, and any situation requiring a temporary deionized water system or high-purity water support.

How quickly can Envirogen deploy a MODI trailer?

Envirogen provides 24/7 service response with rapid mobilisation. Deployment time varies by location, but trailers are typically dispatched immediately to support emergency mobile DI water needs.

What water quality can MODI systems achieve?

MODI trailers deliver consistent high-purity mobile deionization performance exceeding 16 Megohm and <10 ppb silica, suitable for high-pressure boilers, microelectronics, chemical processing, and other critical applications.

What flow rates can a MODI system support?

Standard configurations provide flexible flow rates up to 400 GPM, with a rated capacity of 10 million grain removal per trailer. Multi-unit setups can be used for higher-demand applications.

Do MODI systems require on-site installation work?

Yes. MODI trailers provide on-site mobile deionization with minimal installation requirements. Envirogen technicians handle delivery, hook-up, rinse-up, and start-up.

Can Envirogen remotely monitor MODI performance?

Yes. Selected trailers include PLC/HMI controls and remote connectivity to monitor flow, conductivity, and totalised volume in real time. Predictive analytics also support proactive trailer exchanges.

What happens when the resin in a MODI trailer is exhausted?

Envirogen driver-technicians return to site, blow down and disconnect the exhausted trailer, position the replacement, and complete rinse-up and start-up. Remote monitoring helps schedule exchanges at the ideal time.

Is Mobile Deionization available nationwide?

Yes. Envirogen provides US mobile deionization services with 24/7 response and rapid mobilisation across the United States.

Can MODI trailers operate alongside existing water treatment systems?

Yes. MODI is often used upstream or downstream of existing treatment systems to provide redundancy, polishing, or supplemental capacity.

Can MODI support zero-liquid-discharge (ZLD) or restricted-discharge sites?

Yes. MODI trailers can operate within sites that require reduced or zero discharge, supporting temporary needs while maintaining environmental compliance.

Is Portable Exchange Deionization (PEDI) an alternative to MODI?

Yes. For smaller or lower-flow operations, PEDI provides a flexible alternative. For larger or more demanding applications, a mobile deionization trailer or mobile DI trailer rental may be more appropriate.

Do MODI systems replace permanent deionization systems?

MODI is ideal for temporary, seasonal, or emergency operations. Permanent systems remain more cost-effective for continuous use. Envirogen supports both MODI rentals and long-term mobile DI contract requirements depending on site needs.
